HUGO
Written by Steven Roth
For those of you who read my articles in the political section of AmericanLatino.com your probably surprised to see me here in our Arts& Entertainment section and I figure you should be scratching your heads right about now.
For those of you who know me, Steven Roth, know that my true passion is film. I know a lot about movies, directors, producers, composers and so on. For this reason, I had to jump off the ship of politics for a brief moment to share a cinematic experience with you.
This evening my partner and I decided to treat ourselves to a long overdue night on the town. For those of you married or living with someone for twelve years, you already know that this translates to dinner and a movie which of course is precisely what we planned. After working all day, we met up and headed for the famous Ziegfeld theatre in Manhattan. For those of you who have been to the Ziegfeld know that it is an experience within itself. For those of you who haven't been, I urge you to get there as fast as you can! The Ziegfeld harkens back to the days of when going to the movies was an event. The "Ziegfeld" and it is a movie lovers paradise.
The film we went to see was Martin Scorsese's "HUGO". This is a film which for a director such as Scorsese is quite different from his previous works on many different levels, the first of which is that it is his first 3D film ever and although it is shot in 3D, Mr. Scorsese does not rely on the gimmickry of it's style, but rather uses it in a loving and enhancing way that sweeps the viewer inside the picture. Based on the award winning novel by Brian Selznick, Mr Scorsese not only brings the novel to life but uses it as a platform to express his love and inspiration to the media of film itself. Each frame of film is an homage to his love of the medium and his unmistakable gift as a master director.
The story centers on a young boy who loses his father and lives inside the recesses of a train station outside of Paris and is on a quest to unlock a secret left behind by his father which will change his life and those around him forever. It is magical, funny and quite touching and by it's end will move most of you to tears.
From the opening credits to the closing titles you will be transported to a world that only the magic of film can offer and long after it is over you will find yourself thinking about this remarkable gift Mr. Scorsese has given us.
So, why write politics when I love film so much? well, as in all things I do have much to voice and I do enjoy expressing my opinion. That being said, I'm sure to return to this section and offer suggestions, either good or bad, to you dear readers. I must admit though, that for me, I don't think I will see a film such as "HUGO" ever again as it is for a movie buff like myself nothing short of brilliant and a true testament of why I go to the movies in the first place.
